Discreet Marq wins the Del Mar Oaks

Discreet Marq took command at the top of the stretch and pulled away through the lane to capture the $300,000 G1 Del Mar Oaks by one length Aug. 17.

It was the third straight stakes victory for the daughter of Discreet Cat, who improved her overall record to five wins from 10 starts. Discreet Marq captured the G2 Sands Point Stakes earlier this season.

Ridden confidently by Julien Leparoux, Discreet Marq was kept in third for much of the race, just off the early pace set by Need You Now. As the field entered the far turn, Need You Now was joined on the lead by Unusual Way. Discreet Marq loomed ominously on the far outside, and quickly swept past the frontrunners, taking command as the field hit the top of the stretch.

Through the lane and to the wire it was all Discreet Marq, as the gray filly easily held off the late bids of Wishing Gate and Emotional Kitten to take the Oaks.

Wishing Gate got up along the inside rail to steal the runner-up spot from Emotional Kitten. Kitten's Dumplings rallied late to finish fourth. Final time for the nine furlongs was 1:47.38 over the firm turf course.

Discreet Marq was bred in New York by her owner, Patricia Generazio, and is trained by Christophe Clement.
