Steve Asmussen's assistant trainer Scott Blasi has confirmed that Mike Smith will ride Daddy Nose Best when he starts in the May 5 Kentucky Derby, reports the Blood-Horse. Julien Leparoux, who has ridden Daddy Nose Best in eight of his 10 starts, has the mount on Union Rags for the Derby. Blasi is happy to have the Hall of Fame jockey aboard the horse and feels they'll make a great match.
Blasi said he was unconcerned by the idea that Smith might not work Daddy Nose Best before the Derby. He said: “He's a Hall of Fame jockey; I don't think he's gotten to the point where he's at by not watching replays and doing his homework. I think he'll be pretty familiar with him by the time he gets on him in the Derby. Our horse is really seasoned too.”
