Cozze Up Lady rallied from off the pace to take the Grade 3 Chicago Handicap at Arlington Park on Saturday, holding off Queen's Award by three-quarters of a length, with favored Aubby K another length back as a non-threatening third in the seven-furlong sprint for fillies and mares, aged 3 and up.
Ridden by Miguel Mena for trainer Bret Calhoun, Cozze Up Lady is a 4-year-old filly by Cozzene out of The White Lady, by Johannesburg. She was bred in Kentucky by Farfellow Farms and races for Martin Racing, Morgan Thoroughbred, Westwind Property, and Farfellow Farms.
Flower Spell set the early fractions – :22.64, :45.04 and 1:10.07 – but tired badly in the final furlong. Cozze Up Lady stopped the teletimer in 1:23.06 for seven furlongs on the synthetic Polytrack surface.
The win was the first in a stakes for Cozze Up Lady and fifth victory overall from 11 starts.
