Putting her win streak on the line, Australian wondermare Winx will be chasing a 30th consecutive victory in Saturday's Group 2 Apollo Stakes at Royal Randwick, reports The Daily Telegraph. The Chris Waller-trained daughter of Street Cry is expected to make four more starts before her retirement, culminating in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April.
Another popular local runner, 8-year-old Happy Clapper has finished behind Winx in eight previous meetings but appears to be her main competition in the Apollo. The Group 1 winner is making his first start since September, but trialed well in his most recent effort.
“I'm not happy to have to take on Winx, I'm never happy having to go up against her but 'The Clapper' does run well at Randwick and we have to start somewhere,'' said trainer Pat Webster. “Winx is a champion, the best I've seen, and if he can run second or third to her we know we are on track.''
