Tepin charges to victory in the G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile

Champion turf mare Tepin returned to the work tab for the first time since July 22 when she went a half-mile in an easy 53.07 seconds over Saratoga's Oklahoma turf course.

The Daily Racing Form reports that the mare went in fractions of 13.44 seconds and 26.89 for the opening quarter. She covered her final quarter in 26.18. Jockey Florent Geroux filled in for the injured Julien Leparoux for the work.

“Flo's never been on her before,” trainer Mark Casse told the Form. “We just wanted to stretch her legs a little bit, and that's all she did. As I've always said to you, she's not the most inspiring work horse. If she comes out of this fine, we'll come back with something a little more serious.”

Casse had originally planned on running Tepin at Saratoga, in either the G1 Fourstardave or the G2 Ballston Spa, but wasn't pleased with how she'd been training since arriving at the Spa. He decided to back off on her, and instead point her to the G1 Woodbine Mile Sept. 17.
