Causeforcommotion's nine-length victory in the Grade III Santa Barbara Stakes at a mile and a half on turf May 11 caused trainer Eric Kruljac and his partners in an ownership group to do something uncharacteristic: supplement her for $10,000 and run back in two weeks tomorrow in the Grade I Gamely Stakes at a mile and one eighth on grass at Santa Anita.
“She's squealing when she's going to the track,” said Kruljac, succinctly explaining just how full of herself the five-year-old Kentucky-bred mare is right now. “She's feeling so good we figured we'd take a look at the Gamely.
“The gallop boy (Carlos Aguilar) said she's even stronger than before the Santa Barbara, but my main concern is that a mile and one eighth might be too short for her.
“I think her optimum distance is a mile and a half, and she wasn't even tired after winning the Santa Barbara. That was a gallop for her. But even if she runs third tomorrow, she'll have a G1 (Grade I) on her pedigree (as a broodmare).”
The Gamely is one of three attractive Grade I races offering a total of $1.5 million in purses on Memorial Day, the others being the Gold Cup and the Shoemaker Mile.
Monday is Dollar Day, with soda and beer on sale for a buck and hot dogs for $2. The Gamely, which goes as race seven: Rymska, Irad Ortiz Jr., 5-2; Ollie's Candy, Joel Rosario, 4-1; Meal Ticket, Florent Geroux, 20-1; Vasilika, Flavien Prat, 8-5; Ahimsa, Brice Blanc, 12-1; Streak of Luck, Mike Smith, 15-1; Elysea's World, Drayden Van Dyke, 6-1; and Causeforcommotion, Geovanni Franco, 8-1.
