R3 Racing, Calara Farms and Steve Rothblum's Blitzkrieg kept his win streak alive in Saturday's Grade 3 San Franciso Mile, earning his first graded stakes victory at odds of 3-1. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, the gelding completed one mile over Golden Gate Fields' firm turf in 1:35.56. Trainer Doug O'Neill claimed the 4-year-old son of War Front for $25,000 in January, and he won his next three starts for his new connections.
Blitzkrieg laid just off the pace of frontrunner Many Roses through fractions of :23.44 and :47.72. Rounding the far turn, Blitzkrieg went two wide and took command at the head of the lane, then held off a late run from favorite River Boyne to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Choo Choo maintained his position to finish third, ahead of Le Ken.
Bred in Kentucky by Ramona Bass, Blitzkrieg is out of the Grade 2-winning Arch mare Bauble Queen. He took seven starts to break his maiden, but has only run one bad race since. Overall, the gelding has won five of his 13 starts to earn $242,746.
Earlier on the card, Clearview Stables, RAC 04 Racing and Michael Meegan's Kingly captured the $100,000 California Derby for trainer Bob Baffert. Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, the 3-year-old son of Tapit completed 1 1/16 miles over the all-weather surface in 1:42.73.
