Trainer Aidan O'Brien has outlined a tentative schedule for last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Mendelssohn to return to the U.S. and aim for a second Breeders' Cup run — this time in the Classic.
O'Brien told reporters this week Mendelssohn's been getting some rest after a taxing run in the Kentucky Derby that led to a last place finish. The trainer said he's preparing for a next start in the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes July 7 at Belmont Park on the dirt, then potentially the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby in September before heading to the Breeders' Cup, potentially to take on Triple Crown winner Justify in the Classic.
“It would be very exciting,” O'Brien told the Racing Post regarding the potential matchup of the two Scat Daddy colts.
