Ageless veteran Barbecue Eddie showed the youngsters how it was done with a emphatic 1 1/2-length victory in the $250,000 Al Maktoum Challenge-Round 1 (UAE-II) at Meydan Race Course on the first day of the Dubai World Cup Carnival.
The 9-year-old gelding by Stormy Atlantic had always shown a fondness for Meydan, having won six previous starts there, but the Doug Watson trainee had never scored at this level before. Barbecue Eddie was somewhat overlooked at odds of 4-1, even though he entered the Jan. 10 race on a three-race win streak.
The favorite going into the race was Out of Bounds, who was making his first start in over a year for Godolphin. Well-regarded as a 3-year-old in 2012, Out of Bounds was forced to miss the classics due to an injury.
Out of Bounds was on or near the lead for most of the race, and appeared to have the race at his mercy at the top of the lane. Barbecue Eddie drew alongside to challenge, and the pair battled for a furlong before 'Eddie' drew off for the victory.
Out of Bounds held on for second, with a deadheat for third between Rutland Boy and Fulbright.
