A Steve Asmussen-trained maiden upset the $100,000 Borderland Derby Saturday at Sunland Park.
7-1 Fusa Code ran greenly in the stretch but held on to win by three-quarters of a length for his first victory in five starts. The 1 1/16-mile Borderland Derby is the major local prep for the Grade 3 Sunland Derby March 27. Two years ago, the Sunland Derby produced a strong three-year-old contingent, including Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird.
