After an extended weekend of racing, thanks to Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, the point standings for the Kentucky Derby present a new picture with two stakes winners moving into the top 12.
On Saturday, Mo Tom looked impressive for trainer Tom Amoss when he swept past the field to win the Fair Grounds' Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes. The 10 points he earned in that race brought his total to 12, moving him into seventh in the standings. Also Gayle Benson (G M B Racing) owned, the second-place finisher Tom's Ready earned four points for trainer Dallas Stewart, moving the colt into 19th in the standings. Uncle Walter earned two points finishing third (32), and Destin earned one point for fourth (42).
Monday's Smarty Jones Stakes brought home Discreetness, rallying from third to win at odds of 9-1 for trainer Jinks Fires. The colt also earned 10 points in the race, his first toward the Kentucky Derby, moving him into 12th in the current standings. Gordy Florida's second-place effort earned him four points, moving him into the 20th spot for trainer Kenny Smith. Synchrony earned two points finishing third (33), and Luna de Loco's fourth-place effort earned him one point (43).
The heavy favorite entering the Smarty Jones Stakes was Bob Baffert's Toews On Ice, who faded to finish sixth after pressing the pace. The colt remains in 14th in the standings, owing to the four points he earned when finishing second to stablemate Mor Spirit last out in the Grade I Los Alamitos Futurity.
