A busy Saturday at Gulfstream Park was topped with the performance of Kentucky Derby hopeful Mohaymen, who won the Grade 2 Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths in impressive fashion. The sophomore son of Tapit moved himself into the top position on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with his victory, and cemented his status as the early favorite for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.
Facing a small but talented field of six, Mohaymen settled in fifth early while the frontrunners dueled out their respective positions. Rounding the turn for home, he hooked up with the Todd Pletcher-trained Zulu. That colt matched strides with him for a short time, but Mohaymen proved best in the end as he captured 50 more points toward the first Saturday in May. His total of 70 points has placed Mohaymen firmly atop the leaderboard as the Championship Series continues.
Zulu's second-place effort earned the colt his first 20 points on the Kentucky Derby Trail, moving him into seventh-place overall. The previously undefeated son of Bernardini is owned by Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith.
Fellowship finished third in the Fountain of Youth to earn 10 more points on the Derby trail; the Stanley Gold trainee's new total of 12 points has moved him into 14th place overall for owners Jacks or Bettter Farm. Colts Neck Stables' Awesome Speed finished fourth to earn his first five points toward the Derby, moving the son of Awesome of Course into 25th overall for trainer Alan Goldberg.
