The NBC Sports Group's seven straight weekends of “Summer at Saratoga” live horse racing from Saratoga Race Course continues this Saturday, 5-6 p.m. ET on NBC with coverage of the 142nd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers and the Grade 1 Foxwoods King's Bishop.
COMMENTATORS: Saturday's coverage will be hosted by Laffit Pincay, III alongside Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, handicapper Mike Battaglia and reporter Donna Brothers. NBC will take the race call from the Saratoga track announcer, the legendary Tom Durkin.
ABOUT THE BROADCAST: In addition to the Travers and Foxwoods King's Bishop, coverage will include a feature story on owner Mike Repole who saddles Jim Dandy winner Stay Thirsty in the Travers and 2010 Two-Year-Old Champion Uncle Mo in the Foxwoods King's Bishop. This is Uncle Mo's first race since April's Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial.
NBCSports.com will feature highlights and features from every race, plus online-only features by NBC Sports and VERSUS' on-air talent.
THE TRAVERS: The 142nd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers is shaping up as the most important race this year in the battle to determine the country's best 3-year-old colt. The “Mid-Summer Derby” field includes the Preakness winner, Shackleford, the Belmont Stakes winner, Ruler On Ice, the Haskell winner, Coil, and the Jim Dandy winner, Stay Thirsty. Whoever crosses the wire first will shoot to the head of the class and have a distinct advantage to take home year-end championship honors.
FOXWOODS KING'S BISHOP: The Grade 1 Foxwoods King's Bishop will also be shown on NBC and features the return to the races of last year's Two-Year Old Champion, Uncle Mo. Winner of the 2010 Breeders' Cup Juvenile for owner Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher, the colt will be making his first start since early April after being diagnosed with a rare liver disorder. He debuted on Travers Day last year, winning his debut race by more than 14 lengths. He will face a very good field of 3-year-olds that will include the ultra-fast Flashpoint and Caleb's Posse, who won the Grade 2 Amsterdam earlier in the Saratoga meet.
NBC AND NYRA: In May, The New York Racing Association (NYRA) and the NBC Sports Group announced a partnership to broadcast “Summer at Saratoga,” the most extensive live national television coverage of racing from Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., over seven weekends this summer beginning this Saturday and including the famed $1 million Travers Stakes on August 27.
