The potential sale and reopening of Sports Creek Raceway could bring Thoroughbred racing back to the state of Michigan in 2019, reports mlive.com. In April this year, Hazel Park unexpectedly closed, leaving the state without Thoroughbred racing for the first time in 88 years.
Applications for meeting and track licenses are in the works with the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
George Kutlenios, president of the Michigan Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, said Sports Creek is the only location with an intact racetrack suitable for Thoroughbreds.
“There's certainly an appetite for live thoroughbred racing, (and) being the only Thoroughbred track in the state” will benefit Sports Creek, he added.
