In a unanimous vote, the Saratoga Springs City Council has taken a position against expanded gambling in the city.

According to a report in the Times Union, council members approved a measure 5-0 Tuesday night that opposes a destination resort casino, expressing concern that a new gambling venue would hurt local businesses.

In a plan endorsed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, up to four casino licenses will be awarded to upstate New York locations later this year. An estimated 300 people attended the Tuesday council meeting, which often became quite contentious.
