In a guest blog for Betfair, jockey Ryan Moore explained that winning riding titles isn't everything for most jockeys. Moore is in line to win a fourth title as British flat racing's Champion Jockey after the recent announcement that rival Richard Hughes is out with an injury.
Instead, Moore wrote, it's the media and fans who make much of the contests between riders. He prefers to avoid making long-term plans in such a dangerous profession and instead focuses on racing's big days
“And it is not always about the winning. For example, going over to ride in the Kentucky Derby last year, taking in the whole build-up and occasion, was one of my best riding experiences,” wrote Moore. “So, to be honest, it doesn't matter to me one bit whether I am now the odds-on favourite to win the jockeys' title.
“I will continue to do my job, and that takes me to Dubai, Ireland, America, Hong Kong, Canada and Japan, where quite clearly success will have no bearing on the jockeys' title.”
