Team Valor International is pleased to announce Tom Hammond, Karen Johnson, Tom Keyser, John Pricci and John Sparkman as the judges for the third annual Stan Bergstein Writing Award.
Initiated by Team Valor CEO Barry Irwin to encourage the type of hard-hitting writing that the late Bergstein embodied as a columnist for Daily Racing Form and many other publications, the award is open to any story on the subject of horse racing from a North American publication or website from November 2, 2013 to November 1, 2014.
The judges will decide the award winner in November.
Hammond has been one of the most recognizable and respected sports broadcasters in America in 30 years on the air for NBC Sports. He hosts the network's Triple Crown coverage and is a play-by-play man for the Olympics. His large body of work at NBC Sports dates back to the first Breeders' Cup at Hollywood Park in 1984 and includes two individual Eclipse Awards.
Johnson is an editorial producer at Horse Racing Television and former long-time reporter for Daily Racing Form. The daughter of the late Hall of Fame trainer P. G. Johnson, she is the author of The Training Game: An Inside Look at America's Top Trainers.
Keyser is the only Eclipse Award winner as both a writer and photographer. He received Thoroughbred racing's top honor three times as the racing writer for the Baltimore Sun. In 2012, his photo of the start of the Brooklyn Handicap garnered another Eclipse Award.
Pricci was the Thoroughbred columnist at Newsday for 18 years and currently is the executive editor of HorseRaceInsider.com.
Sparkman is the bloodstock columnist for Daily Racing Form. He previously was the bloodstock editor for 18 years at Thoroughbred Times following a long stint as general manager of Pillar Stud in Lexington, where he devised the mating that produced Kentucky Derby winner Go For Gin.
Team Valor encourages writers and editors to submit stories for consideration for the award to Jeff Lowe at [email protected] by November 1.
