Racing officials in Illinois okayed proposed rules Thursday that would allow historical horse racing machines in the state.
The decision by the Illinois Racing Board comes after former attorneys for the group said they did not have permission to move forward under state law.
The proposal now heads to the Illinois state legislature's rules committee. With approval, it's possible historical horse racing could be implemented in Illinois next year.
The Illinois racing industry would rather have the state approve full casinos and slot machines at tracks but nothing has happened on that front, and officials have elected to pursue historical horse machines instead.
