Hall Of Famers Smith, Stevens At ‘Pick Your Ponies’ Fundraiser For PDJF On Eve Of Del Mar Opening

Racing fans are invited to join Hall of Fame jockeys Mike Smith and Gary Stevens, two-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Doug O'Neill and other racing personalities at the “Pick Your Ponies” party at L'Auberge Del Mar on Tuesday, July 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. PDT

The event benefiting the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund comes on the eve of the opening of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's annual summer meeting.

“Pick Your Ponies” entrance fee is $50, which includes “bites” from Kitchen 1540. There will be a cash bar and live music.

Handicapper Michelle Yu of BetAmerica will discuss Betting 101, share her opening day picks and lead a panel discussion featuring Stevens, Smith, O'Neill and horse owner Scott Kaplan. Also on hand will be Del Mar handicapper Frank Scatoni, celebrity milliner Christine A Moore and former track and field star Percy Knox Jr.

    Yep, and they are not just legends in America, but true legit World Class Group 1 jockies (a term that gets bandied about too loosely, you must be a proven winner in one to two of the other important racing jurisdictions in the world, outside of one’s home jurisdiction) .Something people might (or might not ) realise is that Mike Smith has actually won an Irish Classic , 2000 Guineas in 1991. (not many US TRAINED horses win European classics, or compete) As for Gary Stevens, well, his record speaks for itself.
