Berkeleyside reported this week that trainer Ari Herbertson, 28, of El Sobrante, Calif., has been charged with four felonies related to a sexual assault police say took place near Golden Gate Fields in January 2019.

Herbertson is charged with sexual penetration of an unconscious victim, sexual penetration by a foreign object, assault with intent to commit a sex crime and sexual battery by restraint.

Herbertson was arrested at the racetrack Tuesday morning, according to the Alameda County district attorney's office, which indicated law enforcement had been investigating the incident for a considerable period of time. The office also said in a statement that Herbertson's arrest took place after a DNA match was made.

According to Equibase, Herbertson's stable has saddled 19 starters so far this year with four winners. He began training in 2016 and has a win percentage of 30 percent. His top runners include Albany Stakes winner Krsto Skye and Miss America Stakes winner Psycho Sister.
