A November Breeders' Cup in 2016 has made pari-mutuel handle and purse comparisons difficult, as Breeders' Cup was held in October last year. By combining the pari-mutuel handle and purse dollars for both October and November, the comparative numbers paint a much clearer picture.
Over the course of October and November, wagering on U.S. races has decreased slightly, by 3.02 percent, from $1,678,380,147 over the two-month period in 2015 to $1,627,572,895 this year. During the same two-month period, purses decreased by less than half of a percent, from $204,210,455 in 2015 to $203,274,997 in 2016.
For the year, statistics from Equibase LLC show that handle is up by 0.40 percent.
