Jockey Kent Desormeaux has officially been handed a three-day suspension by the Del Mar stewards, reports drf.com, regarding an incident in the fourth race on Aug. 25.
Desormeaux was aboard Take A Leap, who was in second position for most of the stretch but got nailed on the wire to end up finishing third. A social media outcry ensued, accusing Desormeaux of not riding his mount all the way through the finish.
Del Mar stewards held an initial informal hearing on Aug. 26, and decided to involve the California Horse Racing Board's investigative unit. This week, however, the stewards were told to move forward without an investigation, and a second hearing was held on Sunday. Stewards officially sanctioned Desormeaux for “failure to give his best effort to his mount and the public, costing him a better finish position.”
