Del Mar is planning a five percent increase in purses for this year's fall meeting, according to the Daily Racing Form.
Twenty of 26 purse categories will increase compared to the 2017 fall meet, and lower-level claiming races are a particular area of attention.
A bump in handle during the Del Mar summer meet helped create the financial scenario making the fall purse increase possible. The fall meet runs from Nov. 9 – Dec. 2 and features a pair of Grade 1 turf races with $300.000 purses – the Hollywood Derby and the Matriarch Stakes.
