A representative of Humboldt County Fair hoping for a little help from the California Horse Racing Board last week instead got this from outgoing chairman David Israel:
“I don't know what else to tell you. Tax the pot growers.”
Israel was responding to a request by Humboldt to have more 2014-2015 exclusive racing dates on which no other California track would be running. Under the compromise approved by the CHRB, Humboldt will get one extra “host” date, for a total of four next year. Humboldt representative Jim Morgan said that's not enough and indicated the arrangement would guarantee the failure of the county fair's racing.
“There's only so much money in the pot to offer,” Israel said at the CHRB meeting. “You're getting four host days. You've got to find a way to make it work.”
