Breeders’ Cup plans mystery-mutuel voucher promotion to drive offsite wagering

The Daily Racing Form reports that the Breeders' Cup will award one $500,000 cash prize to the winner of a mystery-mutuel voucher promotion on day two of this year's Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs.  The promotion is designed to drive handle at simulcast betting sites while also providing marketing data to the BC, such as email addresses.  Redeeming the vouchers, which will also include values from $2 to $100, will require online registration.

The DRF says so far, 10 major tracks have signed up to participate in the promotion, but at least one – Tampa Bay Downs – has declined to participate because it does not want to share information in its database.

DRF says:  “The promotion is also a way for Breeders' Cup to reach out to its simulcast sites to ease hard feelings about the rate that Breeders' Cup charges for its signal, which is roughly three times the rate paid by most sites for racing products. The high rate has been a source of irritation to many simulcast sites on one of the most popular racing days of the year.”
