Racetrack workers with diabetes will be getting new , free, top-of the line work shoes from B.E.S.T. a non-profit devoted to improving the physical health and social well-being of barn area workers on New York's major racetracks; Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga.
The inauguration of this shoe distribution campaign will be held at the B.E.S.T. Backstretch Clinic (gate 6 of Belmont Park).
B.E.S.T. treats over 100 diabetics in its Belmont primary care clinic and most suffer from severe foot problems as a direct result of their illness. B.E.S.T. established the B.E.S.T. Steps Forward Campaign in response to this need and collaborated with three private companies; Team Power Play Racing, the Pavilion Grand Hotel and Mingles Restaurant in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
This initiative will provide workers with free, high quality new, water resistant work shoes and socks. These “diabetes approved” shoes were selected by B.E.S.T.'s Podiatrist to provide workers with a shoe that will keep their feet dry while simultaneously avoiding the irritation of prior existing foot sores. At B.E.S.T., we believe in the adage that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Funding of the B.E.S.T. Steps Forward Campaign was provided entirely by a number of horse trainers and owners. B.E.S.T. is grateful for their support and for the inspiration and vision of Lew Mongelluzzo of Team Power Play Racing for the creation of this on-going campaign.
All donations will be used for the purchase of work shoes.
