Officials of Floral Park, N.Y., cautioned residents at a meeting on Wednesday night that the proposed development project encompassing a portion of sprawling Belmont Park racetrack – the focal point of which would be a new arena for the NHL's New York Islanders – could have an impact on their quality of life, reports Newsday.
“Imagine Belmont Stakes traffic every day,” one of the slides in a presentation warned residents of the village that borders the track.
Floral Park Mayor Dominick Longobardi told attendees the scope of the project had grown significantly since it was first announced last December.
“Our goal is to make sure our quality of life does not change,” Longobardi said. “The questions we raise tonight are just the beginning … In my opinion, right now the project is way too big.”
According to Newsday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said construction could begin as soon as early 2019.
