Attendance, Handle at Saratoga Opener Can’t Beat the Heat

by | 07.20.2013 | 9:28am

Attendance and handle for the Friday opener at Saratoga Race Course were down from last year, largely due to the heat, according to a Daily Racing Form report.

On-track handle was $3,338,203, down 18 percent from last year. All-sources handle decreased 7 percent from $16,690,234 to $15,591,240. Attendance was down from 25,676 to 21,935.

The temperature hovered in the mid-90s during the day, with a heat index close to 100.

The crowd that braved the heat saw an excellent day of racing as jockey John Velazquez notched three wins on his way to beating Jerry Bailey's record for most wins during the meet. Additionally, the Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes finished with a thrilling dead heat between Bahnah and Brazen Permission.

Attendance down?—temperature in mid 90’s, short pants not allowed!

Short pants not allowed? Anyway mid 90’s in New York – even though Saratoga isn’t in up-state New York, it’s far enough north that the mid 90’s is hot – they’re not acclimated to it. And 90 there feels like 110-112 here [Oklahoma]. From what I saw on TV they are taking precautions for the horses and the people. That dead heat was awesome. Best wishes for a good meet.

Saratoga is by all means in ‘upstate NY’… mid-90’s not unheard of in July…meet never used to start until August, and by the middle of the month, was cooling down.

Agreed!. We are not that far from the Canadian border…that is pretty “Upstate”,
