Triple Crown Newsreel: Seattle Slew, 1977

by | 06.07.2012 | 6:49am

In 1977, Seattle Slew became the 10th Triple Crown winner and the second in one decade. A bargain buy at just $17,500 at auction as a yearling, not much was expected of him. Even after winning the Kentucky Derby and remaining undefeated, Seattle Slew received little respect until he won the Preakness. Seattle Slew won the Belmont in the slop to remain undefeated in his career.

The video below chronicles the success and the legend of Seattle Slew.

  • PLEASE, Everyone, we need to nominate Jean Cruguet into the Horseracing Hall of Fame. He is the only Triple Crown Jockey, who is NOT in the Hall of Fame. He deserves to be  recognized for his accomplishment for winning the 1977 Triple Crown aboard Seattle Slew. It has been 35 years & this is the perfect year for him to become the 2012 Racing Hall of Fame Jockey :)

  • Ida Lee

You are so right!! Jean Cruguet rode Seattle Slew into the history books and he needs to be recognized like the other Triple Crown winning jockeys. AND of course then there’s Seattle Slew, the greatest horse of his time and as far as I’m concerned, if not for Secretariat, SS would be the greatest TB of all time. Thank you for the video. I never get tired of watching the great “Slew” do his thing.

  • in tears

Thanks for the video on Seattle Slew. I loved that horse. Put tears in my eyes.

  • Pat Turner

Bill Turner isn’t in the HOF either.
