While his younger brother Kent has won the Kentucky Derby three times, trainer Keith Desormeaux will saddle his first Derby starter Saturday. The elder sibling's training career dates back to the late 1980s in Maryland, where he worked under the likes of Charles Hadry (conditioner of Private Terms) before embarking on his own in 1991.
There were a lot of lean years, but Desormeaux persevered and has risen to national prominence recently with horses like Texas Red and now Exaggerator.
I caught up with Keith outside his Churchill Downs barn this week to learn more about the trainer and this long-awaited moment.
