The Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar this weekend is set to be an exciting renewal, with top contenders such as Majestic Harbor and Imperative taking on the race's defending champ, Game On Dude, and the Eclipse Award champion, Shared Belief.
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith has been the regular rider of Game On Dude since late 2012; however, when the field enters the starting gate on Sunday, Smith will be aboard Shared Belief. Choosing which talented gelding to ride was not an easy decision for Smith, as Jennie Rees of the Louisville Courier-Journal notes.
“The decision just came down to, more than anything, that Shared Belief is 3 and has a few good years ahead of him,” Smith said, “whereas Game On Dude is 7 and I'm not sure how much longer his racing career will be after this year…. But they're both extremely talented horses.”
