Trainer Alexis Delgado saddled his first U.S. winner at Gulfstream Park Friday, visiting the winner's circle with Surprising Twist ($12.20) following his 1 ½–length victory in the fifth race.
Delgado, who saddled more than 400 winners in Venezuela, ventured to the U.S. four months ago and credits trainer Jenna Antonucci with educating him about the ways of American racing.
Surprising Twist, who rallied from off the pace under Emisael Jaramillo, was the second U.S. starter for Delgado, whose first starter, King Angelus, finished second in Thursday's seventh race.
“This is a dream come true,” the 35-year-old trainer said through an interpreter. “I was working with Jenna Antonucci and I thank her very much for all of her help.”
Delgado currently has a stable of three with expectations of picking up several more in the near future.
