Drayden Van Dyke won two graded stakes at Del Mar last week to be honored as Jockeys' Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for July 16 – 22, 2018. On a weekend with premier race meets kicking off on both coasts, Drayden Van Dyke was one of just three jockeys to win more than one stakes race and was the only one to win two graded events.
Del Mar's Saturday race card included the Grade 2 $200,000 San Diego Handicap. Van Dyke guided post-time favorite Catalina Cruiser ($4.60) to a nearly seven-length win over Dr. Dorr.
The feature race on Sunday at Del Mar was the Grade 2 $250,000 Eddie Read Stakes. Rather than the favorite, Van Dyke found himself on the longest shot on the board in a 10-horse field. Van Dyke and Catapult ($44.00) made a sweeping move from seventh to gain first place, a neck in front of Sharp Samurai.
Van Dyke was the second leading North American rider by both total earnings and stakes earnings. He earned $276,793 in stakes appearances and amassed $454,990 in total weekly earnings. He has earned $4.9 million in 2018 and has over $25 million in lifetime earnings since his riding career began in 2013.
Van Dyke won six races last week out of 19 mounts for a win rate of 32% and finished in the money on nearly half of his starts. In 2018, he has 71 victories in 334 starts; he has won 464 of his 3,104 mounts in his career to date.
The Eclispe award winner for Outstanding Apprentice in 2014, Van Dyke has since won multiple graded stakes and is the current leading rider at Del Mar through five race days.
