Wayne Catalano, trainer of such 2014 standouts as multiple Grade 1 winner Room Service and triple Grade 3 winner, Aurelia's Belle, has been hospitalized with a severe case of pneumonia.
The Daily Racing Form reports that the veteran trainer has been hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Saint Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, since Tuesday. Catalano's wife, Renee, told the DRF that her husband was sedated and on oxygen.
Catalano reported feeling ill on July 17; while at Arlington Park on Saturday to saddle Aurelia's Belle in the G3 Arlington Oaks, he mentioned still feeling under the weather.
His daughter, Shelbi, who is married to jockey Channing Hill, posted the following update on her Facebook page Thursday morning:
I've never been one to share very personal information on here, but I know so many of you love and care for my Dad I want to share. As many have heard he is very critically ill. I want to thank everyone so far for your love, prayers and positive energy that my dad will pull through. He has very severe pneumonia and an infection in his lungs making it difficult for his body to produce oxygen to circulate. He is paralyzed at the time being to help his lungs and body relax while machines support him. My dad is being so incredibly strong, as he always is. He is so full of life and always positive. We will be strong and stay positive for him.
I want to wish my Dad a very Happy Birthday today. I am so blessed to have him in my life and in my family's life. He has many memories to create with his grandson ahead. I wish him the most precious gift, his health and all the love and prayers that he will get better.
Birthday and get well wishes may be sent to the following address:
