At this year's Saratoga meet, trainer Linda Rice hasn't displayed the same form that saw her become the first woman to win the Saratoga training title two years ago and finish second in 2010. But there's a reason for it.
Rice tells the Albany Times-Union she focused on the Belmont spring/summer meet, where she and Todd Pletcher tied for the top spot with 25 victories a piece. Pletcher is far ahead in the Saratoga trainer standings with 24 wins, while Rice has saddled just 3 winners from 31 starts.
“I could see it was getting pretty close at Belmont and I made a run for it,” Rice said. “We had a great meet at Aqueduct and Belmont and I knew it would probably slow us down a little bit up here, which it has. I knew that going in, and I could live with it.”
