On September 19th the 6th annual installment of “The Betsy,” a grand prix show jumping gala held in honor of the late Betsy Fishback, will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park's Alltech Indoor Arena during the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic Grand Prix, which is the finale of the Hagyard Challenge Series.
Betsy Fishback, a well-known Lexington-based hunter/jumper rider and trainer, passed away in 2009 after a hard-fought battle with breast cancer. She was one of the driving forces behind the creation of Midway College's equine program, and later coached the University of Kentucky's Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) riding team. She also taught riding lessons out of Trackside Farm, which she owned with her husband, Dr. William Fishback, a Veterinarian at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, and helped her daughters Leslie and Sarah achieve success in the show ring.
Last year Kent Farrington won the Hagyard Lexington Classic Grand Prix aboard the gray Dutch Warmblood gelding Willow. The pair also teamed up to win the Hermes Classic at the American Gold Cup in New York and the Credit Suisse Grand Prix at the International Geneva CSI in Switzerland.
Sponsored by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute to benefit the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Foundation and held during the Kentucky National Horse Show, “The Betsy” gala attendees will enjoy prime seating for the Hagyard Lexington Classic, a Grand Prix, outstanding cuisine from Catering by Donna, a bourbon tasting provided by Four Roses Distillery, and a Calcutta auction based on teams of horse and rider combinations.
The gala will also feature a live auction of several unique items. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on a barrel of premium bourbon from Four Roses Distillery, where the winning bidder will have a private selection and tasting experience at the distillery and the chosen barrel will produce between 100-125 exclusive bottles of bourbon. Also up for bid will be a New York Broadway Trip for two, and a Napa Valley Wine Experience for two.
The grand prix will begin at 7:30pm, with the gala commencing at 5:00pm.
There will also be free general admission for the Grand Prix, with Audi of Lexington sponsoring free hot dogs and soda for the first 1500 attendees, and a photo booth with all donations going toward cancer-related research and treatment at the University of Kentucky's Markey Cancer Center.
The Betsy is UK Markey Cancer Foundation's kick-off event to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Proceeds from the event will be used for breast cancer screenings, research, and patient support.
