Chantal Sutherland celebrates her 1,000th career victory, May 2017

Chantal Sutherland will not ride until opening day at Del Mar after badly bruising her leg in a paddock accident at Los Alamitos Thursday.

The Daily Racing Form reports that Sutherland was injured prior to the seventh race when the 4-year-old filly, Be a Lady, reared up and knocked Sutherland down. The filly, who was Sutherland's mount for the race, then stepped on Sutherland's leg before she was settled down.

Tommy Ball, Sutherland's agent, told the Form that the rider taken from the paddock on a stretcher. Sutherland underwent X-rays at Los Alamitos Medical Center, which were negative.

“It's a lot better than she thought it would be this morning,” Ball said. “It was hurting pretty bad.”

“It's going to have some bruising and swelling. She should be all right to work horses at the beginning of the week.”

Chantal I have been cheering for you since your early days at Woodbine I remember meeting your aunt in Pte. Claire OTB. When horses get in your blood and your heart resistance is futile. You will keep getting back on them until you have broken more bones than Evel Knievel just ask Julie Krone and Mike Smith and Laffite Pincay. This sport needs you more as an ambassador than as a jockey. You are fearless aggressive and smart and you know this game. Hot jockeys are a dime a dozen. You can be a game changer- a fresh honest face that can help lead this sport back to relevance and respectability. Be yourself and stay safe you’re an ace in my books…

Absolutely agree — she is my favorite jockey (male OR female) and I am so glad she came back out of retirement. My only wish is that SOMEONE would start giving her “Game On Dude” type mounts again. I’ll put my money on any horse she is riding regardless of the odds or the type of race but she is SO worthy of Grade 1 horses all day long!

Feel better soon, Chantal…………..you are one tough cookie for sure (back exercising horses by the beginning of the week????? W*O*W*)

She stepped on Chatal’s leg, but it didn’t break. Very lucky!! Rest up, & we’ll see you at Del Mar!

Me thinks that filly sure was “no lady” LOL! Reminds me of a shirt I saw that said “You can’t scare me……I ride a mare!” Been there, done that LOL!

      • Jbumi

I guess that’s why they named her Be a Lady – they were trying to tell her something (& it seems she’s not listening)!!!! 😉

        • Judy Gaddis

Yes — I bet she was a real handful right from the beginning LOL! Horses so often name themselves!
