Chantal Sutherland will not ride until opening day at Del Mar after badly bruising her leg in a paddock accident at Los Alamitos Thursday.
The Daily Racing Form reports that Sutherland was injured prior to the seventh race when the 4-year-old filly, Be a Lady, reared up and knocked Sutherland down. The filly, who was Sutherland's mount for the race, then stepped on Sutherland's leg before she was settled down.
Tommy Ball, Sutherland's agent, told the Form that the rider taken from the paddock on a stretcher. Sutherland underwent X-rays at Los Alamitos Medical Center, which were negative.
“It's a lot better than she thought it would be this morning,” Ball said. “It was hurting pretty bad.”
“It's going to have some bruising and swelling. She should be all right to work horses at the beginning of the week.”
