With a successful homecoming week that included two graded stakes victories, Joel Rosario was named Jockeys' Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for December 26 – 30, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America's #1 Equine Toxin Remover.

Rosario was a familiar face and successful rider on the Southern California circuit prior to moving his tack to the East Coast in 2012. Last week, he returned to Santa Anita with a splash, winning two stakes races and finding himself near the top of the rider standings, one win behind Flavien Prat, through the first four days of the meet.

Rosario had nine mounts on the much-hyped Opening Day of the Santa Anita meet on Wednesday. He won two races that day, including the $300,000 San Antonio Stakes (G2) with Gift Box ($15.00) for trainer John Sadler.

He returned to win his second graded stakes of the week with the featured race of the Saturday card at Santa Anita, the $300,000 American Oaks (G1) with Competitionofideas ($12.20) for trainer Chad Brown.

In addition to the stakes victories, Rosario was also second in the Lady of Shamrock stakes on Wednesday with Ms Bad Behavior, second in the Eddie Logan Stakes on Thursday with Rijeka, and third in the Robert J. Frankel Stakes (G3) on Saturday with Quebec.

The stakes placings vaulted him to the top of the earnings leaderboard for the week, with $414,799 in stakes earnings and $528,246 in total earnings, more than any other North American jockey.

Rosario ended the week with five wins, seven second-place finishes, and three third-place finishes in 27 starts, giving him a win rate of 19% and an in-the-money rate of 56%. He has won 160 mounts in 2018 out of 915 starts, with $22.9 million in earnings. His career earnings through 2018 total $188 million, with 2,607 wins in 14,370 starts.

The Dominican Republic native was named Jockey of the Week several times in 2018, most recently in November following his three Breeders' Cup victories, including the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) with Accelerate.

Due to the Christmas holiday, there was no Jockey of the Week for the week of December 17 – 23, 2018. Statistics used for this week's award included December 24 – 30, 2018, though there was no North American Thoroughbred racing for two days last week.
