Joel Rosario celebrates his KY Derby victory aboard Orb

Joel Rosario continued his banner year by being named the Outstanding Jockey of 2013 at the ESPYs Presented by Capital One July 17. He was honored during a ceremony held at the Nokia Theater L.A. Live in Los Angeles.

Rosario has been red-hot this season, earning victories aboard Orb in the G1 Kentucky Derby and Animal Kingdom in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). Rosario was among other top professional athletes such as LeBron James (Best Championship Performance), Michael Phelps (Best Record-Breaking Performance), and The Miami Heat (Best Team) honored during the event.

Rosario was nominated along with fellow riders John Velazquez, Ramon Dominguez, and Javier Castellano.

Nothing against Rosario or the other jockeys who have won ESPY awards, BUT… Only the Kentucky Derby winning jockey ever gets an ESPY. It’s the only jockey ESPN viewers know about. It’s really is a throw away category with the ESPY’s now that ESPN/ABC don’t provide any horse racing coverage.

Yes, this award’s always been an even bigger joke than the ESPYs as a whole.
