A talented field of 10 is set to line up Saturday in Saratoga's signature race, the Grade 1 Travers Stakes. Among the contenders are the Bob Baffert-trained Bayern, winner of the G1 Haskell Invitational; Wicked Strong, winner of both the G1 Wood Memorial and G2 Jim Dandy; and Tonalist, winner of the G1 Belmont Stakes.
Another colt that is in with a strong chance is Kid Cruz, who captured the G3 Dwyer Stakes earlier this summer. Linda Rice, who trains the son of Lemon Drop Kid, would make history should the colt win, by becoming the first female trainer to capture the Midsummer Derby.
As the Times-Union reports, Rice made history in 2009 by becoming the first woman to win the training title at the Spa. Rice has won over 1,250 races during her career, which began in 1987.
“Used to be I was just a novelty training horses,” Rice told the Times-Union. “And then I managed to win some Grade Is and win some training titles, and if we can win the Travers, we've come full circle.”
