The leading jockey by stakes earnings last week, Flavien Prat was named Jockeys' Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for February 19-24, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America's #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
It was a quiet week in the North American Thoroughbred racing world, with a handful of stakes and just two graded events. Flavien Prat won the only Grade 2 race of the week, the $200,000 Buena Vista, with Vasilika ($3.60) on Saturday at Santa Anita.
The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee was the heavy favorite in the race, a one-mile turf affair for older fillies and mares, as she sought her fifteenth win in 30 career starts. Prat let Vasilika relax well off the pace before a sweeping move brought the pair to the wire a length and a half in front of 54-1 longshot Streak of Luck and Tyler Baze.
Vasilika's victory on Saturday was bittersweet. Earlier that day during training hours, fellow Hollendorfer trainee Battle of Midway suffered a fatal injury. Prat was also the regular rider for Battle of Midway, and was aboard for his most recent win, the San Pasqual (G2) at Santa Anita on February 2.
The win in the Buena Vista vaulted Prat to the top of the stakes earnings leaderboard for the week with $120,000. He was the fourth leading rider by total earnings, picking up $267,691 to add to his 2019 total, which now exceeds $2.6 million. To date in his career, he has earned over $46 million.
Prat ended the week with five wins and finished in the money on 60% of his 15 starts. He has won 35 of his 143 starts in 2019 and is 645 for 3,399 lifetime.
Prat trails leading rider Joel Rosario by just three wins in the current Santa Anita Park meet after winning the riding title for the 2018 Santa Anita fall meet.
Due to the Presidents' Day holiday racing schedule, statistics for this ballot comprised races from Tuesday, February 19 through Sunday, February 24.
