Michael Shamburg will be returning to Zia Park in New Mexico as new racing secretary for the 2019 racing season that kicks off Sept. 21. Shamburg previously served as racing secretary for Zia Park from 2008 to 2011.
“We are glad to have Mike returning to Hobbs and overseeing our racing program at Zia Park,” said Chris McErlean, vice president of racing for Penn National Gaming, Inc, parent company of Zia Park Casino, Hotel and Racetrack. “He is well respected among horsemen in the southwest and given his prior experience in Hobbs should hit the ground running,” McErlean added.
Shamburg most recently served as the Thoroughbred racing secretary for Remington Park since 2012 and was racing secretary for Lone Star Park's Thoroughbred meet since its opening in 1997.
“I'm pleased to be coming back to Zia Park and look forward to continuing the progress of improving their racing program,” said Shamburg. With such a strong purse structure we have a good start on building out a competitive racing and wagering product.”
Zia Park will conduct a 53-date Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse mixed meet in 2019 ending on Dec. 18. Racing will be on a Saturday through Tuesday schedule with a special Wednesday card on Nov. 27 featuring the $1-million Land of Enchantment Stakes Day.
Stall Applications for the 2019 race meet will be available beginning May 1 at www.ziaparkcasino.com.
