In the first ballot of 2019, Luis Saez was named named Jockeys' Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for December 31, 2018 through January 6, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America's #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Luis Saez led all North American jockeys with wins last week, visiting the winner's circle at Gulfstream Park 12 times. He won at least one race each of the six days that he rode last week, and on Thursday, he won four of his seven mounts.
One of the wins came in a stakes race, as Saez won one of four stakes starts on Saturday at Gulfstream in the $75,000 Glitter Woman Stakes, a six-furlong sprint on the main track. Saez and Fancy Dress Party ($3.80) maintained an easy lead before winning by nearly six lengths for trainer Ben Colebrook and owner LNJ Foxwoods.
In addition to the 12 wins, Saez also finished second nine times and had two third-place finishes in 46 starts, giving him a win rate of 26% and an in-the-money rate of 50%.
Last year, he won 245 of his 1,465 mounts and earned $17 million. His career earnings total just under $96 million, with 2,050 wins in 12,067 starts.
Saez reached a career milestone in 2018 when he won his 2,000th race at Aqueduct on November 9.
Voters also expressed support for Jesus Castanon, who won his career 2,500th race last week, and Geovanni Franco, who won the San Gabriel Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita by a nose with Next Shares on a pick-up mount.
