The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has elected Leonard C. Hale as its Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President. The announcement followed the TRF Board of Directors meeting at the Gideon Putnam Hotel on Monday, August 10.

Hale joined the TRF as a member of its Board two years ago. He replaces John C. Moore, who guided the TRF through a re-structuring of its board, which now includes three veterinarians, a trainer and a former jockey, as well as Thoroughbred owners, breeders and racetrack executives.

“As a board member, I visited the TRF farms and was so impressed by the care given to the horses by the dedicated people that work there that I was inspired to do more to help the TRF,” said Hale, who has served in different capacities at every major East Coast racetrack in a career that spans more than 50 years. “I have made my living with horses, and it is time to give back. I am delighted with the turnaround the TRF has made under the leadership of John Moore, and we will continue to move forward.”

Moore, who became the Chairman in 2011, will remain with TRF as its Chairman Emeritus.

“The TRF is the only aftercare organization in the U.S. which provides sanctuary, repurposing and equine assisted therapy,” Moore said. “We've done it for over 30 years and care for approximately 900 horses today. Lenny is a great choice to lead the TRF as it seeks to further involve the racing industry and broaden support for the growing Thoroughbred Aftercare movement. I wish him every success.”

Hale is well-known and respected throughout the racing industry. He served in different capacities, including starter, racing secretary and vice-president of racing, at major racetracks in New York, Florida, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Hale has also been a trainer and consultant and handled the boarding of broodmares and lay-ups at Rockburn Farm in Virginia.

“Lenny Hale is a great horseman, an industry statesman, and an inspiration in his devotion to the welfare of the Thoroughbred racehorse,” Diana Pikulski, the TRF's Director of External Affairs. “John Moore's expertise and strong leadership created the strong board and cohesive team that we now have in place. We are thrilled that John will continue to help us as Chairman Emeritus, and I look forward to working with Lenny to take the TRF to new heights.”
