Judge Timothy M. Casserly awarded a stay of his 10-day suspension to apprentice jockey Assael Espinoza in San Diego County Superior Court on Thursday, according to agent Brian Beach.
The suspension was originally handed down by stewards for an incident in which Espinoza caused interference in Saturday's final race at Del Mar; jockeys Corey Nakatani and Geovanni Franco were seriously injured in the incident, and one horse lost his life. Nakatani will be out until the fall meet due to his injuries.
Espinoza's stay of suspension means that he can continue riding until an appeal is heard at a later date.
