Russell Road and jockey Jose Montano unleash a late charge to win the 2014 West Virginia Breeders' Classic.

Jockey Jose Montano rode his 1,000th career winner Friday evening, piloting the sophomore filly Aritzia to a nine-length victory in the last race at his operating base at Charles Town. Montano rode 226 winning races in 2012 en route to the Eclipse Award for leading apprentice jockey, and has been stationed at Charles Town ever since.

Montano has earned a top 100 placing by wins for each of the past four years, never earning less than 146 in a year. His 1,000th win came in just his 4,387th start, a strike rate of nearly 24 percent.

The Mexico native's major career victories include piloting Russell Road to a West Virginia Breeders' Classic win in 2012, as well as six other West Virginia Breeders' series wins.
