Like many sons, jockey Jose Delgadillo has always wanted to follow in his father's footsteps.
The 17-year-old is doing just that, getting his start at Golden Gate Fields this winter. His father, journeyman Agapito, has been a regular on the southern California circuit for years. The younger Delgadillo has several familiar people helping him during the early stages of his career, including the same agent and jockey valet that his father used to have.
As Don August writes in his Bay Area Backstretch blog, the younger Delgadillo hopes he will find success like his father has during his career.
“Everybody tells me 'your dad's a great rider',” Delgadillo said. “ To many people he is a great rider, a longshot rider. I hope I can have the success he had and be better than him.”
