Jockey Masayuki Abe managed to capture a few photos of the snake and posted them on Facebook

Animal stories from Australia never cease to amaze. There's one this week from Cannon Park Racecourse in Cairns.

Early Wednesday morning, jockey Masayuki Abe was galloping a horse on the track when he saw what appeared to be “a big crack on the ground.”

A gateman was trying to warn him as Abe went by… because it wasn't a crack. It was a 15-foot carpet python slowly making its way across the track.

“I didn't think it was a snake because I've just never seen that big one before,” Abe told Fox News. “In two seconds, I realized that was what the gateman was yelling to me and I was so scared after that.”

Abe took to Facebook and shared a few photos of the snake, which finally slithered off into the bushes after four hours. Despite the python's enormous size, the Cairns Jockey Club general manager claims this one is one of the smaller ones in the area.
