Cristian Torres, a 10-pound apprentice jockey, rode the first winner of his career Sunday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., scoring a front-running victory aboard Dempsey in Race 4.
Ralph Nicks-trained Dempsey ($14.60) was the 21-year-old native of Puerto Rico's seventh mount since launching his riding career at Gulfstream April 6.
“I don't have the words to explain how I'm feeling right now. It's a dream come true,” Torres said. “It's been a dream since I was young.”
Torres went to high school in Orlando before returning to Puerto Rico to learn to become an exercise rider. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, he returned to the U.S. and went on to work as an exercise rider trainer March Casse in New York, Kentucky and Florida for a year and a half.
“When I was working for Mark Casse, I decided to work on my weight. The hard work paid off,” said Torres, whose agent is Kevin Meyocks.
