With more wins than any other North American jockey last week and a five-win race day at Louisiana Downs, Richard Eramia was named Jockey of the Week for June 19-25, 2017. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element's Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.
Jockeys are among the hardest working people in the racing industry, and Richard Eramia is no exception: last week, he rode in 42 races on six days at two different tracks. His efforts resulted in a remarkable 17 wins and a 40% win rate for the week.
Eramia's week began Monday at Louisiana Downs, where he won half of his six mounts, then he returned on Tuesday to win two more races. On Wednesday, Eramia won five races on the Louisiana Downs card, including a four-race win streak that began in the second race.
Eramia traveled to Grand Prairie, Texas, to continue his week at Lone Star Park. He appeared in seven starts on Friday and won three consecutive races, followed by one win on Saturday and three on Sunday. Though he had only a single victory on the Saturday card, he finished second in four consecutive races, and had 10 total second-place finishes for the week.
The extra time in the saddle pays off – Eramia is simultaneously the leading rider at one track and the second-leading rider at the other. He has a seven-win edge over Gerardo Mora at Louisiana Downs in a thoroughbred meet that runs through September 27. Since 2011, he has won five riding titles at the Bossier City track. At Lone Star Park, Eramia trails Iram Vargas Diego by seven wins, and has until the end of July to make up the difference.
With his 17 victories from last week, Eramia has won 87 of his 571 starts in 2017, and has earned over $2 million. His lifetime career earnings total $38,770,336 in just over 12,000 starts, including 1,893 wins. He earned $181,827 in last week's 42 starts, which placed him 14th among all North American jockeys by earnings for the week.
Eramia's Jockey of the Week honor marked the fourth consecutive week in which the elected recipient boasted five wins in a single card.
